In response to growing public pressure and emotional appeals from the community, the Mayor of Okahandja has agreed to postpone the planned Okahandja Expo.
The decision follows a tense confrontation between the mayor and local residents, who had called for the event’s cancellation in light of the recent murders of two children in the town. Community members expressed strong disapproval of the mayor’s initial insistence on proceeding with the expo, arguing that the town’s leadership should instead prioritize mourning and seeking justice for the victims.
Political activist Michael Amushelelo, who attended the meeting, openly threatened to use all available means to halt the expo, stating he was prepared to face arrest if necessary. Several other activists also called for the immediate resignation of the mayor and his team, accusing them of failing to address the community’s grief and concerns adequately.
After intense discussions, an agreement was reached to cancel the expo. The town of Okahandja and its residents have now shifted their focus toward finding solutions and uniting behind a common goal: justice for the victims and healing for the community.
