One of the delegates who observed the printing of ballot papers in South Africa passed away

Johannes Matroos

The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) has confirmed the passing of Johannes Matroos, a representative of the Congress of Democrats (CoD), who died while on official duty in Johannesburg, South Africa. Matroos was part of a delegation observing the printing of ballot papers for Namibia’s upcoming elections.

According to an ECN statement released on Monday, Matroos was found unresponsive in his hotel room on 30 October after failing to show up for scheduled transportation to the airport. Emergency services were immediately contacted, and he was transported to MediClinic Morningside in Sandton, where he was stabilized and admitted. His family was promptly notified.

Despite initial medical intervention, Matroos’s health deteriorated overnight, leading to his transfer to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where he remained under close supervision. Sadly, his condition continued to worsen, and he passed away while in intensive care.

The ECN expressed its condolences to Matroos’s family, friends, and colleagues, acknowledging his commitment to the electoral process. Further details regarding arrangements and any potential investigations into his sudden passing were not provided at this time.
