In a significant move to improve road infrastructure ahead of the Easter holidays, the Roads Authority (RA) has announced a massive N$230 million investment aimed at rehabilitating damaged roads in Namibia’s northern regions. The restoration project will cover key transport routes in the regions of Oshana, Ohangwena, Oshikoto, Omusati, and Kunene, which have been severely affected by recent heavy rains.

Speaking at a press briefing, Roads Authority Chief Executive Officer Conrad Lutombi confirmed that repair work will officially commence on Monday next week. According to Lutombi, the recent downpours have caused substantial damage to several critical road networks, leaving many communities vulnerable and isolated. He emphasized the urgency of the repair works, especially with thousands of Namibians preparing to travel to their hometowns for the upcoming Easter holiday.

“The damage to the road infrastructure in the northern parts of the country is extensive. In order to ensure safety and convenience for road users, we are launching this project without delay,” Lutombi stated. He further added that this initiative is not only about restoring roads but also about enhancing mobility, supporting regional economies, and protecting lives.

The Roads Authority has contracted seven reputable companies to spearhead the rehabilitation process. These include Kambwa Trading, Otesa Civil Engineering, Nexus Group, Unique Construction, Eponga Construction, Emirates Construction, and the Roads Contractor Company (RCC). All contractors are expected to be fully mobilized and on-site by Monday.

Lutombi expressed strong confidence in the capacity and professionalism of the selected contractors. “We are working with experienced companies that understand the importance of timely and quality road rehabilitation. Our leadership is already on the ground, conducting assessments and ensuring that the project proceeds according to schedule,” he noted.

The decision to prioritize these northern regions comes at a critical time, as road transport is a lifeline for many rural communities. With agriculture, trade, and daily commuting depending heavily on a reliable road network, this restoration project is expected to significantly boost regional connectivity and economic recovery.

Furthermore, the Roads Authority reiterated its commitment to transparency and efficiency in implementing the N$230 million investment. Continuous monitoring and on-site supervision will be undertaken to guarantee quality assurance throughout the rehabilitation process.

As Namibia continues to experience the effects of climate change, including unpredictable rainfall patterns, the RA is also reviewing its long-term infrastructure resilience plans to prevent future road destruction. Investing in more durable construction materials, effective drainage systems, and timely maintenance strategies are all part of the broader national plan to safeguard public infrastructure.

This major infrastructure project highlights the government’s proactive approach to maintaining road safety, facilitating national mobility, and minimizing disruptions caused by weather-related disasters. Travelers heading north for the Easter break can expect safer, more reliable roads thanks to these swift actions by the Roads Authority and its partners.
