A fraudster pretending to be a Telecom Namibia technician managed to steal N$840,900 from a 48-year-old woman living at Farm Wolftoon, near Aranos in the Hardap Region.
The incident occurred on Friday after the suspect contacted the woman by phone, claiming he was updating her Wi-Fi system. Under this false pretense, he instructed her to download the remote access application “ANYDESK” onto both her cellphone and laptop.
Trusting the caller, the woman followed the instructions. However, during the process, the suspect reportedly accessed her bank account remotely and withdrew the large sum of money without her permission.
The suspect has not yet been identified, and police have launched an investigation into the matter.
Law enforcement officials are reminding the public to be extremely cautious when dealing with unknown callers requesting remote access to personal devices.
