The Ministry of Finance has announced that NamPost will officially take over the distribution of social grants from Epupa Investment Technology, effective 1 October 2025.
This transition, revealed during a public information session at the Swakopmund constituency office on Monday, will see NamPost handling all future social welfare grant payments including cash disbursements previously managed by Epupa.
According to ministry representative Martinus Nakale, the move is part of government’s cost-cutting measures. “Government has been paying Epupa N$9.3 million per month, which amounts to about N$112 million annually. With NamPost, the cost will reduce to around N$4.5 million per month, translating to about N$54 million annually. This saving can be redirected to other developmental projects for the benefit of citizens,” Nakale explained.
To ensure a smooth transition, Nakale confirmed that all beneficiaries will receive a double payout at the end of September covering both September and October before NamPost begins full operations in October.
He further urged all cash beneficiaries to register with NamPost between 1 October and 30 November 2025. Registration will take place at NamPost branches, though arrangements will be made for those living more than five kilometres from a pay point, as well as bedridden or ill beneficiaries.
Nakale also encouraged beneficiaries to open personal bank accounts, stressing that a full shift to electronic payments would eliminate the need for costly cash distribution service providers. Currently, around 70% of Namibia’s social grant recipients rely on cash payments.
Official figures show that the country has approximately 280,000 adult and disabled adult beneficiaries, 370,000 child beneficiaries, and 10,700 children with disabilities receiving grants.
Despite the significance of the announcement, fewer than 60 people attended the Swakopmund meeting. Nakale appealed to those present to share the information with their communities to avoid confusion during the transition.
