Mexico Begin World Cup Campaign with Victory Over South Africa

Mexico kicked off the 2026 FIFA World Cup in style with a 2-0 win over South Africa in a dramatic Group A opener that produced three red cards at Mexico City Stadium.
Julian Quiñones gave the hosts an early lead in the ninth minute after capitalising on a defensive error, while veteran striker Raúl Jiménez sealed the victory with a second-half header for his first-ever World Cup goal.
South Africa’s hopes of a comeback were damaged when Yaya Sithole was sent off shortly after halftime, before substitute Themba Zwane also received a red card following a VAR review. Mexico finished the match with 10 men after César Montes was dismissed in stoppage time.
Despite the chaotic ending, Mexico controlled the contest from start to finish and secured all three points to make a strong start to their home World Cup campaign.
