Senegal Coach Apologizes for Telling Players to Leave the Field in AFCON Final

Senegal’s head coach, Pape Bouna Thiaw, has publicly apologized after controversially instructing his players to leave the field during the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 final against Morocco. The incident sparked widespread discussion across African football, highlighting the intense emotions that can surface in high-stakes matches.
The incident occurred during the match in Rabat on January 18, 2026, which remained goalless late in regulation time. A late penalty was awarded to Morocco following a review by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), prompting a strong reaction from the Senegal coaching staff and players, who believed the decision was unfair.
In the heat of the moment, Thiaw was seen telling his players to leave the pitch in protest. This caused a pause in the game lasting several minutes, with players visibly confused and tense. The situation was ultimately resolved thanks to Senegal captain Sadio Mané, who persuaded his teammates to return to the field and continue the match.
Once the game resumed, Morocco’s penalty attempt was saved by Senegal goalkeeper Édouard Mendy, keeping the score at 0–0 and sending the match into extra time. In extra time, Pape Gueye scored the decisive goal, securing a 1–0 victory for Senegal and delivering the AFCON title to the Teranga Lions.
After the match, Thiaw addressed the controversy, expressing regret for his actions.
“I apologize for asking my players to leave the pitch. It was an emotional reaction, and it was not the right decision. We respect the referee’s authority and the spirit of the game,” Thiaw said.
Thiaw emphasized that while he felt frustrated by the referee’s decisions, walking off was not the proper response. He acknowledged the importance of keeping composure in high-pressure situations and admitted that his reaction was driven by the intensity of the moment.
The incident drew mixed reactions from fans and media. While many celebrated Senegal’s victory and praised the team’s resilience, some criticized the walk-off as unprofessional, suggesting it cast a negative light on African football. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is expected to review the situation and could consider disciplinary measures.
Despite the controversy, the match will be remembered for Senegal’s determination, Mané’s leadership, and their eventual triumph, marking another proud moment in the country’s football history.
