The Namibian Police Force has raised concern over the growing misuse of WhatsApp groups where motorists warn each other about police operations and roadblocks. In some of these chats, officers are insulted and mockingly referred to as “Kapundas.”
Inspector General Joseph Shikongo condemned this behaviour, saying such actions undermine law enforcement efforts and enable criminals to evade justice. He stressed that these platforms should not be used to obstruct police work but rather to share useful safety information or report suspicious activities.
Speaking during a courtesy visit by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on International Relations, Defence and Security, Shikongo appealed to the public to cooperate with law enforcement agencies. He urged citizens to stop harbouring criminals and instead work with the police to promote safety and order across the country.
“Effective policing depends on public cooperation,” Shikongo said, adding that the police remain committed to protecting all Namibians but need the community’s full support to succeed.
