A suspected shoplifter was seriously injured in a hit-and-run incident at the busy traffic circle on Independence Avenue on Tuesday afternoon, following a dramatic chase involving retail store employees in Katutura.
According to staff at the store, the incident unfolded when the man, who has not yet been identified, refused to allow his backpack to be searched as he attempted to exit the premises. The store’s anti-theft alarm reportedly went off, prompting the man to bolt from the scene.
One of the employees gave chase, hoping to stop him or recover the stolen items. However, the pursuit ended in shock when the employee discovered the man lying injured on the roadside, bleeding from his leg. “I didn’t see what happened, but I found him already down, and it looked serious,” the employee said, visibly shaken.
Emergency services were quickly called to the scene, and paramedics treated the suspect before transporting him to a local hospital for further care. The full extent of his injuries has not been disclosed.
Store representatives confirmed that all stolen merchandise was recovered and returned to the shop.
Meanwhile, the driver involved in the hit-and-run remains unknown, and police have launched an investigation into the incident. Authorities are appealing to members of the public who may have witnessed the accident to come forward with any information
