The SWAPO Party has confirmed its candidates for several constituencies in the Kavango East Region following a series of district elective conferences held this week in preparation for the 2025 Regional Council and Local Authority Elections.

Anselm Marungu, the current SWAPO Party Youth League (SPYL) regional secretary, was elected as the party’s candidate for the Ndonga Linena Constituency. Marungu secured a clear lead with 43 votes, defeating the incumbent councillor Michael Kampota, who received 22 votes, while fellow contender Marceline Kahare obtained 17 votes. A total of 92 delegates participated in the internal election process.

Marungu will now represent SWAPO in the regional elections slated for 26 November 2025, aiming to reclaim the seat from the current leadership.

In the Rundu Rural Constituency, Lucas Mbangu emerged victorious with 56 votes against Daniel Kavura, who garnered 50. The closely contested race drew strong delegate turnout and demonstrated the competitive spirit within the party’s grassroots structures. Mbangu is set to face off against Independent councillor Paulus Mbangu in what is expected to be one of the region’s most watched contests.

Additionally, Rudolf Mupiri was selected as SWAPO’s candidate for Mashare Constituency, while Laurentius Mukoya retained his candidacy in the Ndiyona Constituency.

The selection of candidates forms part of SWAPO’s broader strategy to consolidate support and position itself strongly in key constituencies across Kavango East. The party has emphasised internal democracy and inclusivity as it prepares for the national elections later this year.
