A 19-year-old unlicensed driver is expected to appear in court after allegedly crashing a government-issued Toyota Prado assigned to the newly appointed ǁKharas regional governor, David Gerze.
The incident took place around 17:00 on Sunday in the Tseiblaagte area of Keetmanshoop, according to ǁKharas Regional Crime Investigations Coordinator, Deputy Commissioner Nicodemus Mbango. Preliminary investigations indicate that the teenager, reportedly under the influence of alcohol, took the vehicle from a nearby car wash without authorization while the official driver had momentarily stepped away to collect his change.
The vehicle was later found damaged after it collided with rocks in the vicinity.
Rumors quickly circulated that the suspect may have been related to Governor Gerze. However, Mbango clarified that the teen is not the governor’s son and there is no family link. He did confirm that the suspect is acquainted with the designated driver of the vehicle.
Police investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the unauthorized use of the official vehicle.
