An accident was reported on Tuesday, 16 September 2025, at around 22:00 on Maria Mwengere Road in Rundu, Kavango East Region, when a Volkswagen vehicle with two occupants suddenly caught fire.
According to the reports, the vehicle was being driven along the busy road when smoke was noticed coming from the engine compartment. Within moments, flames engulfed the car, forcing the occupants to quickly evacuate. Both men managed to exit the vehicle safely and no injuries were recorded.
The Rundu Fire Brigade and police responded to the scene shortly after being alerted by residents in the area. Firefighters managed to extinguish the blaze, but the vehicle was extensively damaged.
Authorities are yet to determine the exact cause of the fire, but preliminary information suggests a possible mechanical or electrical fault. Investigations are ongoing.
The police have since urged motorists to ensure regular maintenance of their vehicles and to remain vigilant when signs of mechanical problems arise, stressing that quick action can help save lives in such emergencies.
