A heartbreaking incident occurred at Oshinyola village in Omakange over the weekend, where a two-month-old baby girl lost her life after being bitten by a snake while sleeping beside her mother.
According to Namibian Police spokesperson Deputy Commissioner Kauna Shikwambi, the tragedy unfolded on Saturday night when the mother noticed unusual movements from her baby while they were asleep.
“She saw a snake next to the baby and immediately pulled the child away before calling her boyfriend for help. Together, they managed to kill the snake,” Shikwambi said.
The distraught parents rushed to seek help from neighbours in order to get transport to the nearby clinic. Unfortunately, the infant succumbed to the venomous bite before they could reach medical assistance.
Police investigations into the incident are ongoing.
Authorities have since cautioned residents in rural areas to take extra care during the warmer months, when snakes are more active, and to ensure their sleeping areas are secure.
