Windhoek has recorded 54 pedestrian deaths in 463 accidents between January 2024 and October 2025. The Western Bypass has been identified as a particularly dangerous stretch, with 29 crashes.
In response to the alarming figures, Windhoek City Police plan to install CCTV cameras at key accident hotspots, including the Western Bypass. The initiative aims to monitor traffic, deter reckless driving, and reduce further fatalities.
City Police spokesperson Superintendent Marcelline Murapo highlighted that speeding and unsafe pedestrian crossings have made these areas hazardous for both drivers and pedestrians.
“The CCTV cameras will help identify reckless drivers, track overspeeding, and provide evidence for fines or legal proceedings,” Murapo said.
Looking ahead, the City is also considering the construction of pedestrian bridges in high-risk areas to provide safer crossing points and prevent future accidents.
