The City of Windhoek has officially inaugurated a new electric vehicle (EV) charging port at its head office, marking a significant step towards a greener, more sustainable future.
The initiative aligns with the City’s Zero Emissions campaign, which seeks to raise awareness about climate change, greenhouse gas emissions, and air pollution, while encouraging residents to adopt environmentally friendly solutions. The campaign underscores the importance of sustainable practices for a cleaner and healthier future.
Electric vehicle owners can now take advantage of the new charging infrastructure. For example, larger vehicles such as BMWs can be fully charged for as little as N$120. Charging times vary depending on the method: a standard charger typically takes four to five hours, while a DC fast charger can complete a full charge in just 30 to 40 minutes.
In addition to the new EV charging port, the City of Windhoek will host Zero Emissions Week 2025 from 15 to 22 September, commemorating the ongoing efforts to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable transport solutions.
City officials emphasized that investments in EV infrastructure are a critical component of Windhoek’s broader environmental strategy, signaling the city’s commitment to building a cleaner, more sustainable urban environment.
