As more people move to Windhoek, the demand for electricity continues to rise. To help cover the growing costs, the City of Windhoek is planning to raise electricity prices by 4% in the upcoming 2025/2026 budget year.
The City shared this proposal during a public meeting last Friday at the |Khomas Regional Council Hall. The Electricity Control Board (ECB) also took part in the discussion, as they are the ones who must approve the final decision.
Officials explained that Windhoek has grown fast over 67% since 2011 and this has led to the need for more workers and more money to maintain and expand the electricity system. They also noted that NamPower, which supplies power to the City, has already raised its prices by 3.8%.
If the plan goes through, ordinary households will see a 3% rise in their electricity bills, while pensioners will only see a 1% increase.
People living in Windhoek are being encouraged to share their views before a final decision is made. The City says its goal is to keep electricity affordable, even as the city grows and changes.
