A group of taxi drivers in Windhoek held a peaceful protest today at the Ministry of Works and Transport, voicing frustration over the increasing presence of e-hailing platforms such as Yango, InDrive, and LEFA.
The drivers claim these digital transport services are operating without adequate regulation and often offer cheaper rates than traditional taxis. They further allege that some e-hailing drivers lack the necessary permits, creating what they describe as unfair competition that is negatively impacting their income and job security.
Transport Minister Veiko Nekundi received the petition and assured the drivers that their concerns are being taken seriously. He pledged that the ministry would assess the issues raised and work on measures to ensure fair and legal operation across the transport sector.

“I want to assure you that the Ministry of Transport is taking your concerns seriously and will ensure that everyone complies with the laws governing the transport sector.
I also want to emphasize that in Namibia, you do not need to belong to a formal organization to be heard. Even if it’s just one, two, or three individuals, you are welcome to come forward. The ministry is open to listening to your concerns.” – Veikko Nekundi
