Xabi Alonso has confirmed he will step down as head coach of Bayer Leverkusen at the end of the season, paving the way for a potential move to Real Madrid. The announcement was made in a press conference ahead of Leverkusen’s final home game of the Bundesliga season against Borussia Dortmund, which is now expected to serve as a farewell match for both the coach and several players.

“This week, the club and I agreed that these will be my last two games as Leverkusen coach,” Alonso stated. “It’s a moment of mixed emotions, and not one to talk about the future. We want to have a proper farewell on Sunday for myself and some of the players. It felt like the right time to make this announcement.”

Alonso, who guided Leverkusen to a historic league and cup double last season including the club’s first-ever Bundesliga title nearly achieved an unbeaten treble before losing to Atalanta in the Europa League final.

The club’s decision to end Alonso’s contract early, which was initially set to run until 2026, now allows the Spaniard to leave on a free transfer likely clearing the path for him to return to Real Madrid.

Real Madrid, meanwhile, are preparing for changes of their own. Current head coach Carlo Ancelotti is expected to leave at the end of the season. Reports indicate the Italian has already agreed in principle to take over the Brazil national team, following a turbulent season despite last year’s Champions League and LaLiga triumphs.

With Alonso now available and the papers reportedly ready for Ancelotti’s Brazil move, all eyes are on Madrid to confirm their next manager.
