Young Man Released After Alleged N$21,000 Fraud Case Settled Out of Court

Police Report

A 22-year-old man, accused of deceiving a 49-year-old Outjo resident out of N$21,000, walked free today after being held in custody over the weekend. He had been detained at the Katima Mulilo holding cells following his arrest last week.

The case, confirmed by Chief Inspector Charles Mayumbelo, was expected to be heard before Magistrate Davy Kambinda, known for his firm stance on criminal matters, on Monday. However, the proceedings took an unexpected turn after an out-of-court settlement was reached between the accused and the complainant.

According to official documents in the now-closed docket, the accused allegedly persuaded the complainant that he possessed influential connections and could use mystical charms to multiply money overnight. The purported ritual, which was said to take place in a sacred cemetery, ultimately led to the complainant being deceived.

Following extensive discussions facilitated by the state, both parties reached a mutual agreement, leading to the case being withdrawn. Details of the settlement remain undisclosed. The accused was subsequently released, bringing a swift end to the matter.

Authorities continue to warn the public against falling victim to fraudulent schemes involving promises of supernatural financial gains, urging individuals to exercise caution and report suspicious activities to law enforcement.
