Works and Transport Minister Veikko Nekundi has given a final warning to individuals illegally occupying government houses and flats, ordering them to vacate the properties by 1 April or face eviction.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Nekundi raised concern about the continued unlawful occupation of state-owned accommodation. He said the ministry has identified several categories of illegal occupants, including non-civil servants, unauthorised government employees, individuals subletting the properties, and retired public servants who no longer qualify for official housing.

According to the minister, all those who fall into these categories are required to hand over their keys to the housing division of the ministry before the set deadline. Failure to comply, he warned, will result in forced removal from the premises.

Nekundi also announced an increase in penalty fees for illegal occupants, which took effect on 1 January. The monthly charge for one-bedroom units has risen from N$1 500 to N$4 500. Meanwhile, occupants of two- and three-bedroom units will now be liable to pay up to N$10 500 per month. These amounts will attract an additional 20% interest per month.

The ministry says the measures are aimed at restoring order in the allocation of government housing and ensuring that state accommodation is reserved for eligible public servants.
