Medical staff at Onandjokwe Hospital report that a 15-year-old Angolan girl, Fernanda, is gradually regaining her strength after being admitted in a weakened condition following alleged abuse and neglect.

The teenager’s situation first came to light through widely shared social media posts, triggering public outrage and drawing support from both within Namibia and the international community.

Authorities allege that the minor was brought into the country under false promises and later made to work without pay. Investigations further indicate that she may have been subjected to harsh treatment, including physical assault and deprivation of basic necessities such as food and proper care.

Community-driven efforts to assist the girl have gained momentum, with donations helping to cover her immediate needs. Johanness John, one of the organisers behind the fundraising initiative, said the support has extended beyond medical care to restoring the young girl’s dignity.

“There is still more that needs to be done, which is why contributions also included clothing and personal care such as hair braiding,” he explained.

He further noted that members of the diaspora involved in the initiative will announce the total funds raised at a later stage.

Meanwhile, a 62-year-old Namibian woman, Selma Daniel, who has been linked to the case, remains behind bars after the Ondangwa Magistrate’s Court denied her bail. She is facing a range of serious charges, including human trafficking, child labour, exploitation, and neglect of a minor.

The suspect remains in custody as investigations continue, with the case scheduled to return to court on 19 August 2026.
