Late Yirenkyi Strike Gives Ghana Victory Over Panama

Ghana secured a dramatic 1-0 victory over Panama in their 2026 World Cup group match opener after midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi struck deep into stoppage time to hand the Black Stars a hard-fought win.
The two sides battled evenly throughout the match, with Ghana making several changes in the second half in search of a breakthrough. Goalkeeper Benjamin Asare replaced Lawrence Ati Zigi at the start of the second period, while Abdul Fatawu Issahaku and Brandon Thomas-Asante were introduced in the 58th minute to add attacking impetus.
Panama also reshuffled their squad, bringing on José Fajardo and Azarias Londoño after the hour mark, while defender César Blackman picked up a booking in the 72nd minute before being substituted late in the game.
As the contest appeared headed for a goalless draw, Ghana finally found the breakthrough in the fifth minute of added time. Brandon Thomas-Asante provided the assist for Caleb Yirenkyi, who calmly finished to send the Black Stars supporters into celebration.
Panama’s frustration was compounded moments later when Carlos Harvey received a yellow card in the ninth minute of stoppage time.
The victory extends Ghana’s positive run and highlights the team’s resilience, with Yirenkyi’s late heroics proving decisive against a stubborn Panamanian side.
