Messi Extends World Cup Record as Argentina Beat Austria 2-0

Lionel Messi continued to rewrite the history books after scoring twice in Argentina’s 2-0 victory over Austria in their FIFA World Cup group-stage clash, taking his all-time World Cup tally to a record 18 goals.
The Argentina captain had an early chance to put his side ahead but saw his penalty saved in the ninth minute. However, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner made amends by breaking the deadlock in the 38th minute after being set up by Facundo Medina.
Argentina controlled much of the contest, with Lionel Scaloni making several changes in the second half as the reigning champions protected their lead. Messi then wrapped up the victory in stoppage time, scoring his second goal of the match in the 90+5th minute.
The brace came after his hat-trick against Algeria in Argentina’s opening game, meaning Messi has now scored five goals in the ongoing World Cup. His latest strikes also extended his record as the leading scorer in FIFA World Cup history with 18 goals.
