Trump Reportedly Influenced Balogun Suspension Reversal as Belgium Appeals FIFA Decision

Belgium have been given permission to challenge FIFA’s controversial decision to reinstate United States striker Folarin Balogun ahead of the two nations’ FIFA World Cup Round of 16 clash.
According to The Athletic, FIFA has officially granted the Belgian Football Association the right to appeal after the governing body overturned Balogun’s one-match suspension. The striker had been sent off during the USA’s previous knockout match but was later cleared to play.
The decision has sparked widespread debate, with reports claiming FIFA reversed the suspension following an intervention by US President Donald Trump. The reported political involvement has raised questions over the independence of football’s disciplinary process and drawn criticism from several figures across the sport.

Rudi Garcia has strongly criticized FIFA’s decision to overturn Folarin Balogun’s suspension, describing the move as unbelievable ahead of Belgium’s World Cup clash with the United States.
“I didn’t know that at the World Cup the 5th of July is actually the 1st of April. It’s April Fools,” Garcia said, suggesting FIFA’s ruling was difficult to take seriously.
The Belgium head coach insisted his team’s objections go beyond national interests.
“We’re not defending the national team or the federation, we are defending football,” Garcia added, arguing that the decision raises concerns about the integrity and consistency of the game’s disciplinary process.
Meanwhile, the Royal Belgian Football Association also issued a strongly worded statement, saying it was “astonished” by FIFA’s decision to make Balogun eligible for Monday’s World Cup Round of 16 match against Belgium after his red card suspension was lifted.
Belgium’s appeal will now be reviewed by FIFA, although it remains uncertain whether a final ruling will be delivered before the highly anticipated World Cup last-16 encounter between Belgium and the United States.
