Man Unknowingly Collects Deadly War Bombs to Sell as Scrap in Kavango East

A man from Omega in the Kavango East Region narrowly escaped serious danger after unknowingly taking three war bombs to his home, intending to sell them as scrap metal.
According to regional police spokesperson Robert Katamba, the man found the objects and, without realizing they were bombs, collected them as part of scrap materials to sell to scrap companies, a practice that has become a growing source of income for some residents.
The situation was averted when a concerned community member identified the items as possible bombs and immediately advised that the police be contacted.
Police officers responded to the scene and confirmed that the items were large bombs believed to have originated from past war activities in the area, two had already exploded, but one is still active. The explosives were then safely destroyed through a controlled detonation carried out by specialists.
Following the incident, police conducted awareness campaigns in the community, educating residents about the dangers of unknowingly handling bombs and other remnants of war.
Katamba further warned that Kavango East remains one of the regions where remnants of war may still be found, urging the public to be cautious when collecting scrap metal and to report any suspicious objects to authorities immediately.
