Independent Candidates Gain Ground Across Namibia as Voters Push for Change

Namibians have sent a strong message through the ballot box, choosing new leadership and showing a growing willingness to remove long-standing political parties in favour of independent candidates. The Updated World has compiled a list of independent candidates who secured council seats in various constituencies during the recent regional elections.
Independent Winners by Constituency:
- Rundu Rural Constituency: Paulus Nginga Mbangu
- Mashare Constituency: Petrus Kashumali
- Kongola Constituency: Likukela Busihu
- Ncuncuni Constituency: Michael Naiteta
- Tsumkwe Constituency: Petrus Mutji
The Kavango regions stand out prominently, producing the highest number of successful independent candidates. According to several community voices, many voters opted for independents because they believe political parties often operate according to party manifestos rather than addressing the real needs of the people. Some residents expressed frustration, saying party leaders impose directives from afar and are not present in the communities they claim to serve.
Paulus Nginga Mbangu of Rundu Rural is frequently cited as a leading example of the impact an independent councillor can have. Since taking office in 2020, he has gained substantial trust from residents by focusing on practical service delivery and honouring his commitments. His re-election reinforces public confidence and serves as encouragement for the newly elected independents who have just taken office.
