Zambia’s governing United Party for National Development (UPND) has highlighted what it describes as the media fraternity’s experiences before the party came into government, as the country prepares for the 13 August 2026 general elections.

In a post published on its social-media platform, UPND shared a video depicting what it described as the challenges faced by members of the media fraternity under the previous administration.

The party urged voters to reflect on the country’s past political environment when casting their ballots on 13 August.

“As you go to vote on 13th August, 2026, ask yourself: Do you want to go back to those dark days or continue with peaceful environment under the able leadership of Republican President Mr Hakainde,” the party stated.

The message forms part of the UPND’s election campaign ahead of President Hakainde Hichilema’s bid for another term in office.

Hichilema and the UPND are campaigning on a message of continuity, while opposition parties are seeking to challenge the ruling party in the upcoming election.

Zambia’s 2026 election campaign has also featured broader debate over democracy, peace and the country’s political direction.

A report on Zambia’s media environment has previously documented developments affecting the country’s broadcasting sector, including the closure of Prime Television under the previous administration and its subsequent licensing after the 2021 change of government.

With the election only days away, political parties are increasingly using their platforms to remind voters of their respective records and persuade them to support their preferred candidates.
