LPM Asks US Government for Intervention, Alleges Political Persecution by Swapo

The Landless People’s Movement (LPM) has written to the United States government, accusing the Swapo-led administration of targeting its leaders and supporters through what it describes as political persecution and growing election-related violence.
In a letter dated 17 November 2025 and addressed to the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, LPM leader Bernardus Swartbooi warns that the political climate in Namibia has become increasingly unsafe for the party. The letter, seen by The Updated World, alleges that LPM members are facing systematic intimidation ahead of upcoming elections.
According to the letter, the party claims the situation has deteriorated to a point where it is now seeking asylum protection for its supporters. LPM argues that this request is meant to “prevent the mass killing of people,” which it alleges is being orchestrated “quietly” by the Swapo-led government.
The document outlines a range of grievances, including accusations of state-endorsed brutality, historical injustices, and what the party says is ongoing oppression of various communities. LPM maintains that the current political environment raises serious concerns about the safety of its members and the fairness of Namibia’s democratic processes.
The ruling party has not responded publicly to the accusations made in the letter.
