Tension is rising in the //Kharas Region after Landless People’s Movement (LPM) leader Bernadus Swartbooi voiced strong concerns over an unusually large military presence near Keetmanshoop. Residents say they have been startled by the sound of gunfire and explosions, reportedly coming from an area just a few hundred meters outside the Kronlein residential location.

Swartbooi, visibly frustrated by the situation, said the deployment of nearly 1,600 soldiers feels less like a routine exercise and more like an attempt to intimidate communities in the South. He questioned why such a massive force would be stationed in a region not facing any visible external threat.

“They call it drills, but this doesn’t look like drills at all,” he said. “What we are experiencing feels like the beginning of a conflict directed at the LPM and the people of the South. Where are South Africa, Angola, Botswana or Zambia threatening you here?”

He went as far as saying that the LPM plans to seek help from U.S. President Donald Trump to ensure civilian safety if the situation escalates. Swartbooi described the soldiers as “occupational forces,” claiming their activities have already created fear among residents.

According to him, the noise from the drills was so intense that people struggled to sleep. “They have already started the shooting war here,” he said. “We heard the shots the whole night.”

His comments follow ongoing complaints from Keetmanshoop residents, who say the loud blasts and gunfire have disrupted their peace and left them questioning what is really happening.
