Namibia joins regional push for historic AFCON 2028 hosting bid

Southern African football has taken a major step forward after it was confirmed that Namibia is part of a joint bid to host the 2028 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) alongside Zimbabwe, South Africa, and Botswana.
The announcement was made by the newly elected COSAFA president, Qabile Thana Tariq Babitseng, who revealed that the regional football body is backing a unified proposal to bring Africa’s biggest football tournament to the Southern African region.
The bid represents a collective effort by the four nations to stage the continental showpiece, marking one of the most ambitious hosting projects ever proposed within the region. If successful, it would be a first-time AFCON hosting opportunity for some of the countries involved and a return to Southern Africa as a tournament host.
Football stakeholders across the region are expected to continue discussions as the bid process develops, with COSAFA playing a central coordinating role in rallying support and aligning preparations among member associations.
The final decision on the 2028 AFCON hosting rights will be made by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in the official selection process.
