Zimbabwe’s National Sports Stadium Secures CAF Category 3 Approval

Zimbabwe’s National Sports Stadium has received a major boost after being granted CAF Category 3 approval, paving the way for the country to host a wider range of international football matches on home soil.
The approval was announced by Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture following a recent technical inspection by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and progress made on improvement works at the stadium.
Under the new classification, the National Sports Stadium can host CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup group-stage and quarter-final matches, subject to meeting the specific requirements of individual competitions.
The stadium can also accommodate Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and FIFA World Cup qualifiers, as well as other international competitions permitted under CAF Category 3 regulations.
According to the ministry, CAF acknowledged the work undertaken by the Zimbabwean Government and the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) to address issues identified during previous inspections.
Major step in stadium redevelopment
The development represents an important milestone in efforts to restore the National Sports Stadium to its position as Zimbabwe’s leading football venue.
The government has linked the rehabilitation programme to its broader infrastructure development objectives under the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2) and Vision 2030, with an emphasis on creating modern and sustainable sporting facilities.
The ministry said the approval would also help ensure that Zimbabweans can watch major international football matches on home soil, rather than national teams and clubs having to rely on venues outside the country when hosting requirements are not met.
The return of international football to the National Sports Stadium could also provide a significant boost to local supporters, clubs and the wider sports industry.
Sakunda Holdings recognised for support
The Ministry also acknowledged Sakunda Holdings for its contribution towards the rehabilitation and modernisation of the stadium.
Through its partnership with the government, Sakunda Holdings has supported several improvements, including the modernisation of the pitch and the installation of bucket seats.
The ministry said these interventions have contributed to improving the stadium’s functionality, appearance and overall experience for spectators.
The CAF Category 3 approval therefore marks more than just a classification for the venue. It signals progress in Zimbabwe’s efforts to restore one of its most important sporting facilities and strengthen the country’s ability to host major international football events.
