A controversy has emerged ahead of the FIFA World Cup preparations after renowned Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan was reportedly denied entry into the United States despite being selected for official World Cup duties.

Artan, widely respected as one of Africa’s top football referees, had travelled from Kenya and transited through Turkey before arriving in the United States, where match officials are currently gathering for a FIFA seminar in Miami. The seminar forms part of the final preparations before referees are assigned to matches in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

However, upon his arrival, U.S. immigration authorities denied him entry and placed him on a return flight to Turkey. The reasons behind the decision have not been publicly disclosed, leaving football officials and supporters seeking answers.

The development comes after Artan had already faced challenges securing a visa for the trip. According to reports, significant public support and widespread attention on social media played a role in helping him obtain the necessary travel documents.

The Somalia Football Federation has since escalated the matter to FIFA. The federation’s Head of Referees formally contacted world football’s governing body regarding the incident, and FIFA has acknowledged receipt of the complaint, indicating that a response will be provided as soon as possible.

Sources close to the matter say Artan is currently in Istanbul, Turkey, where he remains stranded. Reports suggest that complications may be linked to the use of a diplomatic passport. Immigration officials reportedly informed him that diplomatic passports are reserved for Somalia’s highest-ranking government officials, including the President, Ministers, and Members of Parliament.

Adding to the difficulties, Artan is said to be without his personal phone and laptop. Communication with him has been limited to a Turkish phone number through which he can only make calls and send messages.

The incident has sparked concern within the football community, particularly given Artan’s years of dedication and hard work to reach football’s biggest stage. Many believe the experienced referee should currently be focused on preparing for World Cup duties rather than dealing with travel and immigration complications.

Meanwhile, officials from the Somalia Football Federation are expected to discuss the matter urgently. A high-level meeting involving government leaders, including the Minister, federation president, and other senior officials, is anticipated following a send-off dinner being hosted for Somalia’s U-17 Women’s National Team ahead of their departure to Tanzania for the CECAFA Championship.

As the football world awaits further clarification, attention now turns to FIFA and whether a resolution can be found to allow one of Africa’s most respected referees to participate in the tournament preparations.
