A fishing trip turned tragic on Saturday evening when a woman drowned after her canoe capsized in the Kavango River at Kahoro village.
According to the Namibian Police, the incident happened around 17h00 on 8 November 2025, when six women from the area went to the river to fish using traditional baskets.
Reports indicate that the group crossed into Angolan waters to fish and were returning home when one of the canoes, carrying two women and their babies, overturned. While one woman and her child managed to reach the shore safely, the other, identified as Aune Simuma Hakusama, was swept away by the strong river current.
Hakusama, reportedly could not swim. Her one-year-old baby was rescued by another woman who witnessed the tragedy.
Police said that by Sunday, the victim’s body had not yet been recovered. A search operation involving the Namibian Police and local community members was still underway.
“The search for the body continues, and updates will be provided as progress is made,” a police spokesperson said, adding that the victim’s family has been informed.
Authorities have reminded residents living near the river to take extra precautions when fishing or crossing the river, particularly when the water level is high.
Police investigations into the incident are ongoing.
