SUN Urges Government to Pay Student Allowances Earlier

The Student Union of Namibia (SUN) has called on the government to begin disbursing students’ non-tuition fees as early as January, citing ongoing delays that have left many struggling to meet basic needs.
SUN president Natangwe Shikesho said students have gone for months without receiving their allowances, placing them under significant financial pressure. He noted that many rely on these funds for essentials such as accommodation, food, and transport.
Currently, student allowances are typically paid out in April. However, Shikesho argued that this timeline is too late, especially for students who have already demonstrated financial need but are still left without support at the start of the academic year.
The union maintains that earlier disbursement would ease hardship and allow students to focus on their studies without financial stress.
Meanwhile, Namibian Student Financial Assistance Fund (NSFAF) spokesperson Percy Tjiahere indicated that a formal response on the matter would be issued in a media statement expected on Friday afternoon.
