Four Feared Dead After Missing Aircraft Wreckage Found in Sossusvlei

The search for a missing light aircraft that disappeared over the weekend ended in tragedy on Monday morning after the wreckage was discovered in the Sossusvlei area.
According to Desert Air, the aircraft was located at approximately 09:15 on Monday following an intensive overnight search operation. The company confirmed that the pilot and three passengers who were on board were found at the crash site, with no survivors reported.
The aircraft had been reported missing on Sunday, prompting an urgent search involving emergency personnel, aviation authorities, and local volunteers who combed the remote desert terrain in an effort to locate the plane.
In a statement issued after the discovery, Desert Air Chief Executive Officer Willem de Wet expressed condolences to the families affected by the tragedy.
“We extend our deepest and most sincere condolences to the families, friends, and loved ones of those who lost their lives,” said de Wet.
The airline confirmed that all next of kin have been formally informed and said its immediate priority is now to provide support to the grieving families as well as employees affected by the incident.
Authorities have since taken control of the crash site as investigations into the cause of the accident are expected to commence. Recovery teams remain on the scene while aviation officials continue with preliminary assessments.
Desert Air also thanked all emergency responders and volunteers who participated in the search operation under difficult conditions in the desert environment.
The company further appealed to the public and media to respect the privacy of the bereaved families during this difficult period.
