The National Assembly Standing Committee on Urban, Rural Development and Land Reform is conducting an oversight visit in Rundu to assess the delivery of housing, land and basic services, particularly in informal settlements.

The Committee is holding a stakeholders’ meeting at the Rundu Trade Fair Centre, where key institutions and organisations are expected to present information on the current housing and land situation in the town.

Among those expected to make presentations are the National Housing Enterprise (NHE), the Shack Dwellers Federation of Namibia (SDFN) and the Rundu Town Council.

The engagement forms part of the Committee’s broader oversight responsibility to examine challenges surrounding housing provision, land availability and access to basic services in communities.

Particular attention is being given to the conditions experienced by residents of informal settlements, including access to essential services and the challenges affecting efforts to improve living conditions.

The Committee is also expected to gather views and information from stakeholders on the effectiveness of existing interventions and the gaps that continue to hinder adequate housing and land delivery.

Information gathered during the visit will contribute to the Committee’s recommendations to the National Assembly, with the aim of strengthening the Government’s response to the growth of informal settlements and improving access to decent housing and basic services.

The oversight visit comes amid continued demand for affordable housing and serviced land in Namibia, with local authorities and communities facing challenges related to land availability, infrastructure and the provision of essential municipal services.

Through engagements such as the Rundu stakeholders’ meeting, the Committee seeks to obtain a clearer understanding of the challenges on the ground and identify possible measures that could improve coordination and service delivery.

The visit also provides an opportunity for affected communities and relevant stakeholders to contribute directly to parliamentary oversight and the development of recommendations aimed at addressing housing and land challenges.

The Committee’s findings are expected to inform its subsequent deliberations and recommendations to the National Assembly.
