Namibia, Sierra Leone reaffirm historic ties and commitment to women’s political participation

Namibia and Sierra Leone have reaffirmed their longstanding relationship and commitment to strengthening cooperation, particularly in education, institutional development and the advancement of women in political leadership.
The commitment was highlighted during a courtesy call by a Sierra Leonean delegation on the Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Dr. Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila, in Windhoek on Wednesday.
The engagement provided an opportunity for the delegation to reflect on its visit to Namibia, with members expressing appreciation for the hospitality extended to them and the lessons gained during their engagements, particularly in the fields of education and performance management.
Discussions also focused on the importance of quality education as a foundation for national development, as well as the need to empower women and create greater opportunities for their participation in political and decision-making processes.
Kuugongelwa-Amadhila welcomed the establishment of a Women’s Caucus, describing it as an important development that can bring women from different political parties together to collectively advance gender equality and strengthen women’s representation in leadership.
The Speaker noted that greater collaboration among women in politics can contribute to creating a stronger voice for gender equality and ensuring that issues affecting women remain firmly on the national agenda.
Beyond the contemporary areas of cooperation, the meeting also brought a historical dimension to Namibia–Sierra Leone relations.
Kuugongelwa-Amadhila reflected on her own early years of education in Sierra Leone during Namibia’s liberation struggle, recalling the support and solidarity the West African country extended to Namibians during the struggle for independence.
Her reflections underscored the longstanding bonds between the two countries, which were forged through shared experiences and Sierra Leone’s contribution to Namibia’s liberation efforts.
The Speaker said the delegation’s visit was a reminder of the enduring friendship between Namibia and Sierra Leone and the importance of maintaining those relations for future generations.
She further emphasised the value of institutional cooperation and mutual learning, noting that both countries can benefit from sharing experiences, strengthening their institutions and identifying areas where cooperation can produce tangible results.
The visit therefore served not only as a diplomatic engagement but also as an opportunity to deepen people-to-people and institutional relations between the two countries.
The discussions demonstrated that the Namibia–Sierra Leone partnership extends beyond historical solidarity, with both countries seeking to translate their longstanding friendship into continued cooperation in education, governance, gender equality and institutional development.
As Namibia and Sierra Leone continue to build on their shared history, the engagement highlighted the importance of preserving the foundations laid during Namibia’s liberation struggle while creating new avenues for cooperation that respond to contemporary development priorities.
The courtesy call ultimately reaffirmed the two countries’ shared commitment to learning from one another, promoting inclusive leadership and strengthening a partnership rooted in history, solidarity and mutual respect.
