Hull City Shock Manchester United with 2-0 Victory in Premier League Opener

Manchester United suffered a disappointing start to the 2026/27 Premier League season after newly promoted Hull City produced a commanding 2-0 victory at the MKM Stadium on Saturday.
The defeat was particularly damaging for Michael Carrick’s side, who entered the campaign with high expectations after finishing third last season. Instead, United were punished by a well-organised Hull side that made the most of its opportunities, particularly from set pieces.
Hull took the lead in the 17th minute when Semi Ajayi reacted quickest to a rebound following a corner, giving the hosts an early advantage.
The Tigers doubled their lead before half-time. Nobel Mendy rose to meet Regan Slater’s delivery from a free-kick in the 38th minute, sending a header beyond Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens.
United struggled to respond despite having more possession after the break. Carrick introduced Marcus Rashford in the second half, marking his return after a lengthy absence, but the forward was unable to inspire a comeback.

Bryan Mbeumo came closest to reducing the deficit when his effort was saved by Hull goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis, who played a key role in keeping United scoreless.
Hull’s disciplined defending frustrated United throughout the second half as the newly promoted side held on comfortably to secure three valuable points.
The result also marked a historic moment for Hull, who returned to the Premier League after nine years and immediately recorded a memorable victory over one of England’s biggest clubs.
For Manchester United, the defeat leaves Carrick with plenty to address as the club looks to recover from a difficult opening weekend.
