Manchester United begin their 2026/27 Premier League campaign on Saturday with a demanding away fixture against newly promoted Hull City at the MKM Stadium, as Michael Carrick’s side look to make a positive start to the new season.

The opening-day meeting comes after reigning champions Arsenal began the campaign in impressive fashion on Friday, defeating newly promoted Coventry City 3–0.

United finished third in the Premier League last season and secured Champions League football, raising expectations around Carrick’s first full campaign in charge. However, the manager has warned against underestimating Hull, particularly because newly promoted sides can be difficult opponents on home soil.

Rashford returns with No. 9 shirt

One of the biggest talking points surrounding Manchester United ahead of the match is the return of Marcus Rashford.

The England international is back at Old Trafford after spending time on loan at Aston Villa and Barcelona. His return provides Carrick with another attacking option as United begin the new campaign.

Rashford has also been handed Manchester United’s vacant No. 9 shirt following the departure of Rasmus Højlund. The decision is significant given the uncertainty surrounding Rashford’s future earlier in the summer and represents a fresh opportunity for the forward to rebuild his career at United.

Rashford is, however, among the substitutes for the opening fixture, meaning supporters will have to wait for his competitive return to the starting XI.

Hull City ready for Premier League return

For Hull City, the fixture marks a major moment in the club’s history as the Tigers return to the Premier League after securing promotion through the Championship play-offs.

Hull defeated Middlesbrough 1–0 in the play-off final at Wembley in May to earn their place in the top flight.

The Tigers have undergone significant changes during the summer, bringing in a number of new players as they prepare for the challenge of Premier League football. Greek goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis, for example, arrived from Olympiacos in a club-record transfer.

Sergej Jakirovic, who guided Hull to promotion, now faces the challenge of keeping the club in the Premier League. The opening fixture could hardly be more demanding, with Manchester United providing the opposition on Hull’s return to the top flight.

Starting XIs

Hull City: Tzolakis, Coyle, Ajayi, Egan, Mendy, Giles, Crooks, Slater, Belloumi, McBurnie, Stroud.

Substitutes: Phillips, Millar, Hjerto-Dahl, McNair, Drameh, Herrington, Targett, Dowell, Gourna.

Substitutes: Darlow, Dalot, Martinez, Yoro, Mainoo, Lacey, Rashford, Sesko, Zirkzee.

The match also gives Manchester United supporters an early look at new midfield additions Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, both of whom are included in the starting XI.

With Hull determined to celebrate their Premier League return and United aiming to establish momentum under Carrick, the opening-day clash presents a contrasting test for both clubs: Hull are fighting to prove they belong among England’s elite, while United are looking to build on last season’s top-three finish and begin another campaign with Champions League ambitions.

The 2026/27 Premier League season officially began on Saturday, August 22, with Hull’s home meeting against Manchester United one of the opening fixtures.
