Rundu Sports Stadium Closed for Rehabilitation, Upcoming NDF Games Left in Limbo

The Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture has announced the temporary closure of the Rundu Sports Stadium, effective Friday, 17 July 2026.
According to an official public notice signed by the ministry’s Executive Director, Gerard Norman Vries, the closure is necessary to undertake essential maintenance and rehabilitation work on the playing field. The maintenance package will include comprehensive de-weeding, replanting, levelling, and structural rehabilitation of the pitch to ensure its long-term viability.
As a direct consequence of the maintenance work, the Ministry has cancelled all sporting activities and bookings scheduled at the facility between 17 July and 19 September 2026.
“Users are kindly advised to make alternative arrangements for the continuation of their programmes during this period,” the notice states.
“The Ministry will notify all stakeholders once the rehabilitation of the pitch has been completed and the stadium is ready to resume hosting sporting activities.”
The Ministry further extended its apologies to the public and sports fraternity for any inconvenience caused by the abrupt but necessary closure.
The two-month closure heavily impacts local and national sports calendars, most notably the highly anticipated Namibian Defence Force (NDF) Games, which were widely expected to take place at the venue this coming August.
With the stadium completely inaccessible until late September, organizers of the NDF Games face a tight logistical bottleneck. It remains unclear how or where the tournament will be rescheduled, as alternative venues in the region may struggle to accommodate the scale of the multi-disciplinary military sporting event.
Stakeholders and sports fans are currently awaiting an official statement from the NDF leadership regarding whether the games will be postponed to a later date or moved to an entirely different regional facility.
