China has thrown its support behind Nigeria following remarks by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who accused the West African nation of allowing what he called a “Christian genocide” and suggested possible military action. Trump also recently redesignated Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern.”
In response, the Chinese government issued a firm warning against any external interference in Nigeria’s internal affairs.
Speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday, November 4, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Mao Ning, emphasized Beijing’s strong support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
“China firmly supports the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as it leads its people on a development path suited to its national conditions,” Ning stated.
She described Nigeria as China’s “comprehensive strategic partner” and reiterated that China stands with Nigeria amid rising international pressure.
Ning added that China opposes the use of religion or human rights as a pretext for foreign interference:
“China firmly opposes any country using religion and human rights as an excuse to interfere in other countries’ internal affairs, and threatening other countries with sanctions and force.”
