23-year-old mother attempts to kill her newborn by burning her in a toilet

A newborn baby girl is fighting for her life after she was allegedly burned and dumped in a pit latrine by her own mother in Olwiili village, Okalongo Constituency.
The incident happened early on Friday morning when people nearby heard a baby crying from a pit toilet in a crop field and alerted the police. Officers arrived at the scene shortly after 07:00 and worked together with residents to dig open the latrine and pull the baby out alive.
Police said investigations show that the 23-year-old mother gave birth to the baby and later threw her into the pit latrine. It is further alleged that she lit a fire inside the toilet, apparently to kill the child and hide the crime. The baby suffered serious burn injuries during the incident.
Nurses were called to the scene and provided emergency care before the infant was taken to Okalongo Health Centre. She was later transferred to St Martin’s Hospital in Oshikuku for specialised treatment.
The mother has been arrested and is facing a charge of attempted murder under the Domestic Violence Act. She is expected to appear in the Outapi Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 12 January 2026.
