The Namibia Police Force has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening language proficiency within its ranks through specialised training aimed at improving operational effectiveness.

This was highlighted on 07 May 2026 at the Israel Patrick Iyambo Police College, where Commissioner Teopolina Nashikaku, Head of the Crime Prevention Directorate, officially launched the three-month Advanced Portuguese Language Training Course.

The programme brings together 25 selected participants, predominantly from the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) as well as various regional units. It builds on earlier basic Portuguese courses that were previously implemented with support from the Embassy of Portugal in Namibia.

According to NamPol, the initiative is designed to enhance communication skills among officers, particularly in multilingual operational environments, thereby improving service delivery and cross-border cooperation where necessary.

The advanced training forms part of a broader strategy by the police force to continuously develop its personnel through targeted capacity-building programmes. This approach is aimed at ensuring officers remain well-equipped to respond to evolving policing demands and emerging challenges.

NamPol further emphasised that ongoing professional development remains a key pillar in achieving its vision of providing effective policing services for a safer Namibia, while maintaining readiness and operational excellence across all units.
