Spain were forced to settle for a 0-0 draw after being held by a well-organised Cape Verde side in a disciplined and hard-fought encounter in their 2026 World Cup opener in group H.
Cape Verde produced a compact defensive display from the opening whistle, limiting Spain’s space in the final third and frustrating their attacking rhythm. Despite sustained possession from the European side, clear chances were difficult to come by.

However, Cape Verde continued to defend with discipline and organisation, successfully neutralising Spain’s late pressure. Despite wave after wave of Spanish attacks, the breakthrough never came.
