Lionel Messi produced a masterclass on the biggest stage as Argentina opened their FIFA World Cup campaign with a convincing 3-0 victory over Algeria in Group J.
The 38-year-old captain scored all three goals in Kansas City, registering the first World Cup hat-trick of his illustrious career and guiding the defending champions to a perfect start. Messi opened the scoring in the 17th minute after being set up by Rodrigo De Paul before adding a second shortly after the hour mark. He completed his treble in the 76th minute with another trademark finish before receiving a standing ovation when substituted late in the match.
The historic performance saw Messi reach 16 World Cup goals, equalling German legend Miroslav Klose’s all-time men’s World Cup scoring record. The match also marked another milestone for the Argentine superstar, who made his 200th international appearance and became the first player to feature in six FIFA World Cups.
Argentina dominated possession and looked comfortable throughout, with Lionel Scaloni’s side displaying the form that made them reigning world champions. Algeria struggled to create clear opportunities and were unable to find a way past Argentina’s disciplined defence.
The victory sends Argentina to the top of Group J and gives them early momentum in their quest to retain the World Cup crown, while Algeria will look to bounce back in their next fixture.
