Two Grade 9 Learners Among Three Arrested as Police Seize Cannabis Worth More Than N$30,000 and N$19,666 Cash in Grootfontein

Police in Grootfontein have arrested three people, including two Grade 9 learners, following separate but linked drug-related incidents that unfolded on Wednesday.
According to Otjozondjupa Police spokesperson and Community Liaison Officer, Senior Inspector Maureen Mbeha, a 19-year-old female learner and a 16-year-old male learner from Friedrich Awaseb Secondary School were apprehended after they were allegedly found in possession of a ziplock bag containing cannabis, commonly known as skunk, with an estimated street value of N$725.
The two learners were arrested on school premises and face charges under Section 2(b) of Act 41 of 1971, which prohibits the possession of dependence-producing substances.
In a related development later the same day, police arrested a 32-year-old woman, who is reportedly the aunt of the 19-year-old learner. Preliminary investigations suggest that she may have been the source of the drugs.
During the operation, police allegedly recovered 18 ziplock bags containing cannabis with an estimated value exceeding N$30,000. Officers also seized N$19,666 in cash, which is suspected to be proceeds from illicit drug trafficking.
The three suspects are expected to make their first appearance in the Grootfontein Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 19 June 2026.
Police investigations into the matter are continuing.
