Kavango West Third Division Upper Stream Title Race Ends in Controversy After Red Stars FC Crowned Champions
The Kavango West Third Division Upper Stream has been thrown into controversy after Red Stars FC were crowned league champions, with several clubs questioning the decision and calling for a review of the final standings.
Heading into the penultimate round of the season, Kapande FC led the league with 38 points after 18 matches. Chippo Stars FC were second on 36 points, Satoka FC had 35, while Sinzogoro FC and Red Stars FC both had 33 points.
After the weekend’s matches, the title race tightened significantly. Red Stars FC defeated league leaders Kapande FC 2-0 to move up to 36 points. Sinzogoro FC beat Chippo Stars FC 3-1, leaving both teams level on 36 points, while Satoka FC claimed a 1-0 victory over Ngondo United FC to reach 38 points.
With one round of fixtures remaining, the standings were:

However, before Sunday’s final matches, the Kavango West Third Division Upper Stream Executive Committee (EXCO) released an updated league table after ruling on matches involving Real Top Challengers FC.
The EXCO awarded Red Stars FC three points from their previous 3-0 defeat to Real Top Challengers FC. Chippo Stars FC were also awarded two additional points from a drawn match against the same team. The decision followed allegations that Real Top Challengers FC had fielded an ineligible player who was registered in the Kavango East Third Division League.
The revised standings before the final round became:
- Chippo Stars FC – 39 points
- Red Stars FC – 38 points
- Kapande FC – 38 points
- Satoka FC – 38 points
- Sinzogoro FC – 36 points
The decision has sparked complaints from several clubs. They argue that the same player featured for Real Top Challengers FC throughout the season, including in matches against their teams. Satoka FC, for example, drew against Real Top Challengers FC while the player was on the field.
The clubs believe that if Red Stars FC and Chippo Stars FC received additional points because of the player’s ineligibility, then every team that dropped points against Real Top Challengers FC under the same circumstances should also receive the appropriate points.
According to the EXCO, clubs were expected to submit formal appeals for such cases to be considered. However, some teams say they were unaware that the player was ineligible and therefore had no reason to lodge protests at the time.
The final round of matches produced the following results:
- Chippo Stars FC 1-2 Kapande FC
- Red Stars FC 2-1 Sinzogoro FC
- Mururani FC 0-3 Satoka FC
The final standings, based on the current official table, are:
- Red Stars FC – 42 points
- Kapande FC – 41 points
- Satoka FC – 41 points
- Chippo Stars FC – 38 points
- Sinzogoro FC – 36 points
Despite Red Stars FC being declared champions, the title race may not be over. If Satoka FC are awarded two additional points from their drawn match against Real Top Challengers FC, they would finish on 43 points and become league champions.
On the other hand, if the league decides that all matches involving the ineligible player should be reviewed equally, the points awarded to Red Stars FC and Chippo Stars FC could also be reconsidered. Such a decision could once again change the final standings in favor of Kapande FC.
