Hichilema Warns Against Political Violence Ahead of Zambia’s August 13 Elections
Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema has warned political parties, candidates and their supporters against engaging in violence and disrupting lawful campaign activities ahead of the country’s 13 August general elections.
In a statement, Hichilema said every political party has a legal right to campaign during the period allocated by the Electoral Commission of Zambia and stressed that anyone who prevents others from exercising their democratic rights is breaking the law and will be held accountable.
The President’s remarks follow reports of political clashes, including incidents involving National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP) presidential candidate Brian Mundubile in Western Province.
Hichilema said violence, intimidation and any attempt to disrupt lawful political activities would not be tolerated and warned that perpetrators would face the full force of the law.
He further urged political leaders, candidates and citizens to promote peace, tolerance and mutual respect throughout the election period, saying peaceful campaigns are essential for free, fair and credible elections.
