Luis Figo Demands Infantino’s Exit, Says FIFA Leadership Has Lost Trust
Former Portugal international Luis Figo has called on FIFA President Gianni Infantino to step down, accusing him of damaging the reputation of football’s global governing body and losing the confidence of key figures within the sport.
Figo, who previously challenged for the FIFA presidency in 2015, launched a strong criticism of Infantino’s leadership, claiming that the FIFA president had failed to deliver on his promises to improve the organisation.
“Infantino has debased the office that he promised to elevate. He has lied, deceived and tried to feather his own nest at the expense of the game he is supposed to serve,” Figo said.
The former Real Madrid and Barcelona star further alleged that Infantino no longer enjoys the backing of senior FIFA officials, advisers and many members of the international football community.
“It is too late to save his dignity but it is not too late to save football. He should go. Now,” Figo added.
Infantino, who has led FIFA since 2016, is currently seeking continued support ahead of upcoming presidential elections. He is expected to hold a meeting in Morocco as part of efforts to strengthen his backing among football stakeholders.
FIFA has not yet responded publicly to Figo’s remarks. Infantino remains in office after being re-elected unopposed in 2023 for another term, with the next presidential election expected to determine the future direction of the organisation.
