DIALOGUE CONTINUES AS SAMORA MACHEL RESIDENTS VOICE SERVICE DELIVERY CONCERNS
Dialogue and collaboration took centre stage during a public meeting in the Samora Machel Constituency, where the City of Windhoek engaged residents on key service delivery and community safety concerns.
Alderwoman Fransina Kahungu called for continued engagement between the City and residents, saying, “Let’s have dialogue and through dialogue, we will find solutions.”
Residents raised concerns about crime and safety, overcrowding in informal settlements, limited emergency access, and inadequate access to water, electricity and municipal infrastructure.
They also called for improved community facilities, including a formal sports field.
One of the major concerns was the high density of informal settlements, where tightly packed structures can restrict access for emergency services.
Residents warned that limited access for ambulances and other emergency response teams could pose serious safety risks.
Councillor Lydia Kanime called for stronger security measures, including additional CCTV cameras.
“We need more CCTV cameras here. Our people are not safe,” Kanime said.
The City indicated that CCTV cameras have already been installed in areas including Wanaheda, Greenwell Matongo, Goreangab and parts of Havana.
Councillor Austin Kwenani acknowledged the scale of the service delivery challenges facing the constituency, saying the size of the area makes it difficult to provide municipal services.
“The constituency is vast, which makes it challenging to provide municipal services.
However, we are working on a lot of development here every day,” Kwenani said.
The City said it continues to roll out communal water points, electrification projects and other interventions aimed at improving living conditions in the constituency.
The engagement forms part of the City of Windhoek’s ongoing community outreach programme, which seeks to strengthen communication with residents, identify service delivery challenges and work towards practical solutions.
